Defining Liberal

I heard something the other day that I felt I should comment on. For those of you who don't know, I have a U.S. History class on Monday and Wednesday mornings. The other day, my teacher, who has established herself as a democrat by believing that Fox News is just a joke, was going on about Colonial Times when she came about “the birth of Liberalism.” This was a brand new idea at the time. Instead of helping God like the majority mindset of their time, the idea of liberalism was to help oneself. Seriously, the original definition of Liberalism was to help oneself. It shouldn’t come so much as a surprise to me though as it seems to echo in the mindset of every liberal I see. Don’t believe me, fine. Take a look at the Dictionary.com definition of it.

A political theory founded on the natural goodness of humans and the autonomy of the individual and favoring civil and political liberties, government by law with the consent of the governed, and protection from arbitrary authority.

Read that definition carefully. “The autonomy of the individual.” The modern definition may be somewhat different from the original definition, but it’s still there. At least I see it. With all these anti-war protests going on, someone’s behind them making money. Probably even more money than most Republicans make. Although it’s not always out in the open of course. As for the majority of the Democrats, that’s why they are anti-war. They act so fiercely when it comes to a relatively small number of innocent lives dying for a humane cause that they go out protesting in huge numbers and trample police if they get the chance to. And when it comes against that, it’s ok with them. The police aren’t individuals, right? Or maybe the people the Dave Matthews band dumped shit all over aren’t individuals either. It’s become such an obsession over the individual that if many individuals die, that’s just a breaking point isn’t it? It doesn’t matter if they died for something they believed in or if it was an accident or millions of more lives have been saved. If roughly 13,000 citizens as opposed to the roughly 25,000,000 citizens living in Iraq have died – and by the way, many of them were insurgents – it’s a worldwide problem.

But all things considered, there is a silver lining: Progress. We have brought democracy and a free govt. to the people of Iraq. We’re putting their kids through school; they’re living healthy and can now enjoy a similar to American way of life that even includes going to restaurants, fast food places, etc. Stuff that the tyrant ruled over them before and killed even more of his own people for his own sick pleasure didn’t let them have. The majority of or Iraqis are enjoying a higher quality of life now. That’s what I call progress.
